1. The Best of Youth

I reread the brilliant Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and absolutely loved it the second time around. (spoilers) I think it helped that I knew the ending this time. Galadria: Peter Huddleston and the Rites of Passage by Miguel Lopez de Leon turned out to be such a fun book! I'd never heard of it until a mom at my son's soccer class lent me a copy. In fact I was surprised that it was unknown to me since the author is Filipino and he recently just released his book last May in the United States. I decided to read Florence &amp; Giles by John Harding for the  R.I.P. VI Challenge because it's described as a retelling of The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. The latter is one of the scariest stories I know and it was also filmed as The Innocents (1961) one of the creepiest films I've ever seen.

Before reading Snowdrops by A.D. Miller, I read several reviews from both sides of the fence. Two of the books I listed in my top ten for 2010, The Help by Kathryn Stockett and One Day by David Nicholls are soon to be released as films. I've just come across their posters on the web. I love the poster of The Help, don't you? I can't wait to see these movies both of which I think will translate very well to the big screen.

I finished this late last night and I just couldn't sleep after that. Wow. Notice I wrote wow with a period after it and not an exclamation point. This is a quiet wow, a breathless wow and a sad wow all rolled into one because of how the ending affected me. Extremely Loud &amp; Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer has blown me away with its beauty. I confess that while I've been nursing my newborn, (before I got my Kindle) I haven't been able to read that much. It's not so easy to hold a book while cradling a baby in your arms. Yesterday was the last day of NYRB Reading Week and what a fantastic week its been.We've had so many participants and we now have many wonderful reviews to read. Here's my first review for the NYRB Reading Week: Don't Look Now by Daphne Du Maurier. As readers of my blog know, I'm a big, big fan of Daphne but I'm not a fan of short stories and that's probably why I've been avoiding her short story collections. However, I must say that I'm quickly being converted. Ok, so it's coming around to that time of year again....Halloween! I love reading chilling stories in October so I'd like to hear your recommendations for books that have really spooked you. I thought I'd throw another bookish question out there because my  Which Books Made You Cry? post got a lot of responses. One Day by David Nicholls was truly unique because it made me cry but it also made me laugh in parts. Oh dear, I'm having another book slump. After finishing the terrific One Day by David Nicholls, I've picked up several books which I abandoned after just a few pages or chapters. I've been reading reviews for One Day by David Nicholls for months and I've passed by the book several times in bookstores. The premise intrigued me but I've read the unimpressive Starter for Ten by the same author and I thought this would be another disappointing read. How wrong I was! What a disappointment! My first thought after reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins was 'What the heck? What was that about?' I can't believe this got published. The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas is the first book I've read  that's on the Booker longlist and I'm not quite sure if it's deserving enough to get on the shortlist. I did read the whole book but only because it felt like a very  good season of a TV soap like Desperate Housewives or Mad Men only in  this case I think it should be renamed Desperate Housewives and  Husbands.

There's something truly wonderful about the medium of graphic novels.  Somehow, if the art is brilliant, the book can convey so many different  emotions without too many words and that's exactly what happens in Blankets  by Craig Thompson. This is a beautifully drawn and written book about  the pain of adolescence, trying to fit in, religion, first love, first  heartbreak and growing up.

A new Nick Hornby novel is always something to look forward to and when I saw his latest novel Juliet, Naked at the Schipol airport in Amsterdam, I grabbed it. I remember reading A Long Way Down a few years ago on a long-haul flight and laughing out loud so much. I think Hornby is perfect for a plane ride or for long sleepless jet-lagged nights.

Juliet, Naked doesn't disappoint. I so enjoyed The Brooklyn Follies that I followed it up with another Paul Auster novel, Man in the Dark. This one is a short book at just 148 pages. While not one of his best, it's still a worthy piece of work filled with all the things I love about Auster.

I'm having a very Willy Wonka week as I've just read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl to my four-year-old son and he absolutely loved it. And really what's not to love? I recently remembered this short essay I read in Richard Feynman's The Pleasure of Finding Things Out. Feynman (1918-1988) is a Nobel Prize winning American physicist. Read this and I guarantee you'll never look at a flower the same way again.
