Recent Acquisitions
Two acquisitions today and both are books I've already read.
Talking It Over by Julian Barnes - I loved this book when I read it over ten years ago and since then its popped into my mind once in a while. My friend Yolanda who's visiting at the moment mentioned it a few days ago out of the blue and that did it! I have to reread this. This is the story of a love triangle told from three different points of view. I wish I could use it as my book club read but there aren't enough copies in Manila book shops.
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway - I read this when I was eighteen but I didn't like it. I have a feeling my opinion will change now. I'm reading this together with Claire of Kiss a Cloud and Mark David of Absorbed in Words .
Have you read any of these and what did you think?
Great choices. I read The Sun Also Rises having heard it feature in a programme about the best romantic novels of all time. Needing a bit of romance in my life I read it - it didn't sweep me off into whirlwind of romance though. Maybe that was just the phase of life I was in then.
ReplyDeleteLoved the Sun Also Rises but read it in my rebellious 20s not sure I would enjoy it so much? Also I know more about Hemmingway as a person now and I know it shouldn't but that would feed into the way I viewed the book...
ReplyDeleteI always struggle with Hemingway and am rarely able to finish his books once I pick them up. His style grates on me but I keep going back, trying again, desperate to find the appeal that everyone else seems to see.

I enjoyed that Julian Barnes novel too, although I have blurred it totally with the sequel (Love, etc.: have you read that one too?); I love it when authors pick up with characters later like that. I re-read the Hemingway novel about five years ago, but I really didn't enjoy it anymore the second time around, although I wish I had. Maybe I should try another instead.

I didn't like either of these, I'm afraid! I read The Sun Also Rises because I didn't want to be unfairly biased against Hemingway without reading one of his novels (instead of only short stories), and when I finished I decided my dislike of Hemingway was just and fair. And Talking It Over wasn't bad at all, but I wanted more from it than I thought it delivered. I'm curious to see if your opinion of the Hemingway will have changed!

ReplyDeleteLovely copies of both books. I like To Whom the Bell Tolls film version (Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper?) for Hemingway Romance as, although I read TSAR in my twenties, I don't think I'd want to do so again. Will be interesting to hear what you all think though!
ReplyDeleteOh so Fiesta's already a re-read for you then? I've already started it and I think I can understand why some people wouldn't like it. It's stuffed with seemingly endless dialog! LOL! But Hemingway's great with dialog, anyway. I like his short stories, so I might like this book as well... I'm happy that you're reading with us! :)
ReplyDeleteI read this in High School, but I often think that the required reading for that age group is above their heads; they can't truly appreciate the greatness of the authors until later, I think. Not to diminish what a great thinker I assumed I was at seventeen. ;)
