A Separation

I recently saw A Separation, the Iranian film that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It's a great movie and a must-see. At first I thought it was about a couple who file for divorce and fight for custody of their daughter but the film is so much more than that. It's better to go in knowing nothing so you'll be completely unprepared for its twists and turns. The movie is riveting and never boring. Do yourself a favor and see this movie! Or better yet, see it with friends and discuss it afterwards.

  1. Were the Oscar voters trying to send a message to Washington by honoring this film? I suspect so. It’s hard to live in LA and take seriously the Washington/Tel Aviv storyline of Iran as the new Nazi Germany. That’s because the Westside is full of Iranians, many of them Jews; yet they make frequent visits home to see their kin. I don’t think Einstein vacationed in Berlin in 1939.

  2. This is an absorbing film that speaks volumes. Like you've mentioned, more than just a domestic conflict. And I love the ending.

    1. I think I can guess what she chose. There's indeed so much to discuss. Can't wait to discuss it with my Movie Club.

  4. I was very impressed with this film, and so glad that it won Best Picture at the Oscars. It was nice to see a film set in Iran that dealt with the complexities of everyday life in Iran like A Separation did.
