Little Women

I've just finished Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? I adored it and I wish I had read it as a child or a young teenager. But having said that, it's also a joy to read now as a wife and mom. It contains a wealth of valuable life lessons for girls, daughters, wives and mothers. It's a truly special book and I think it should be required reading for every young girl.

I saw the film a number of years ago and I loved it. I plan to see it again, so I thought I'd join the challenge hosted by C.B. James,  Read the Book, See the Movie (see post below) . This would be a wonderful choice for it. I'll keep this short for you'll be reading more about  Little Women in this blog in the coming year.

Have you read Little Women? If you haven't, it's never too late for it.

*Since many of you commented that you plan to read Little Women, I'm editing this post to add that you must read the unabridged version. This is the one with two parts.

  1. Truly, never too late. This was a favourite by me and my sisters as children. I think it's the first book we three ever agreed on loving. Am thinking of rereading soon.. :)

  6. I couldn't agree with you more. I read an abridged version when I was a child and the whole book this year, and it was amazing to see what it meant to me as a child and what it means to be now as a mother. This is a special book and I hope it remains a classic forever.

  7. When I was a boy, "Huckleberry Finn" and "Tom Sawyer" were for boys, and "Little Women" was for girls. Never the twain should meet. Never did read "Little Women".

  8. Little Women is the type of book that can grow with you through the years and through different stages in your life. That's why it's one of my ultimate favorites. :)

  9. What a lovely edition you have! That's enough to make me want to run out and buy a copy to re-read! ;) I did read this one when I was a little girl, but only remember a few key points here and there. I think it might be one I would appreciate even more, now that I'm older, so I think I might have to find my old copy (or buy a pretty new one!) and give it another go!

  10. I have never read little women. As a child a friend of mine loved it (she was always re-reading it) but I was interested in other things like sci-fi. I picked up a copy earlier this year and I'm glad to know it's not too late!

  11. Yes, Little Women is lovely and the characters are wonderful. It's a pity it's known as a girls' book when there are excellent male characters as well as a strong plot. Interestingly, my mother always preferred What Katy Did and the sequels but I'd need to read both of them in parallel and compare to see what I think.

  12. I watched the movie last summer, and it was pretty fabulous. I hadn't seen it since I was a lot younger and, like the book, it held something new for me.

  13. Thank you everyone for your comments. If you're going to buy a copy of Little Women, make sure it's not the abridged version. The original has two parts, it includes both Little Women and Good Wives. It's definitely a richer experience with both parts and that's how the author meant it to be read.

  14. I love this book so much! Little Women is one of my childhood favourites. I have Good Wives in a separate volume to read over Christmas. There are also two other sequels - Little Men and Jo's Boys all about Jo and the school she sets up and her sons.

  16. Like you, I suspect I'd have enjoyed it even more when I was younger, but I still got a lot out of it now. And it's just such a cosy book - perfect for time time of the year.
