Recent Acquisitions

I bought four books this week. I hope these will be enough to sustain me during the holidays as I don't want to buy more this year. I've still got a cache of books I ordered from the internet on the way but it appears they won't get here till January...aargh!

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley - I'm currently reading this and loving it. Review to come soon.

Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood - Its been years since I read an Atwood novel. I loved Alias, Grace and I also thought Cat's Eye and the Handmaid's Tale were brilliant. With many recent reviews of her latest novel, the Year of the Flood, I decided to purchase this which is supposedly the first part although it's not compulsory to read the books in order.

Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel - I'm now regretting this. I'm not sure I'm going to like it. It was an impulse buy because Mantel recently won the Booker prize. But on closer inspection and after checking it out on Amazon, it sounds like it's also a bit bizarre. A medium plagued by nasty spirits? Hmmm...any thoughts?

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott - This is beloved by many of you and I loved the film. I figure it's about time I read the book and it seemed like an appropriate choice for the season. I know there are abridged copies out there so I hope I got the right one. There seems to be two parts so I do think this Puffin edition includes Good Wives. I hope so!

So, what do you think? Have you read any of these books? And...what books have you bought lately?

  1. Have fun reading Little Women! Looking forward to knowing your thoughts about the book =)And yes, I do think this edition that you have includes Good Wives.

I bought Heidi, Anne of Green Gables, Middlemarch and Train to Pakistan yesterday - these books are on my list for 2010 challenges =)

  2. I love to watch the 1994 Little Women each December. This year I finally read the whole book (read an abridged version when young) and I loved every word of it. I hope you do too:) Oh...that edition is a pretty one.

  3. The only Hilary Mantel novel I have read is Beyond Black and I was really surprised by it. It certainly wasn't the book I was expecting...I can't quite remember why I bought it, but think it was the third of a three for two deal. It is an odd book, but very readable and good fun. Maybe not one you'll return to or recommend to anyone but it certainly made me want to read more of Mantel's work. Be interested to read what you think of it!

  4. Thanks for visiting me. I read your review of "Her Fearful Symmetry" and I agree. I wrote a mini-review of "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie." I hope you continue loving it. For me, it ran out of steam (see my review). I'll be back to look through your archives. I love connecting with other book lovers.

  6. I totally adored Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and am so looking forward to the next in the series in Spring. I am very keen to read Beyond Black and Oryx and Crake too as they are both on the TBR pile.

  7. Little Women is right up there as one of my all-time faves. I guess if there such a thing as a comfort book, this would be it for me.

Beyond Black seems interesting, though. A dark novel, I think, but then I do like dark ones. Would like to know what you think of this book.

  8. Little Women is one of the books I read when I was really young - I loved to read long books that I thought no one my age could get through - I read Les Miserables as a 10 year old! I've read Little Women a couple of times since - it's great. I'm sure you'll like it. :)

  9. Enjoy Little Woman! Seasonal reading because it opens on Christmas day and there are lots of snowy/ice skating scenes.

  10. I can't tell you the number of times I've started Little Women and not finished it! I don't know what my problem is, because I've loved what I read, but I seem to bog down in the middle. This year, I'm going to read it through for sure! It looks like you have a great stack in your photograph. I hope you fare better than I with your endeavors on the top one. ;)

  11. Hi, Mrs. B! Told you you're going to love The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie! Anyway, you'll love Beyond Black too. Currently, I'm reading Mantel's Booker-prize winning novel, Wolf Hall.
